I found out that an old comedy friend of mine was hit by a car while he was walking on a highway in Texas early yesterday morning and killed. To be clear, he had a lot of problems with drugs and alcohol on and off but he had many stints of sobriety, too, and was really trying. He was also very giving... he took time out of his day to talk me through things I was struggling with on several occassions; he couldn’t have been kinder.
Also, there’s this: He was fucking amazing at standup comedy. The owner of the DC Improv once told a story about how Erik opened for Mitch Hedberg years ago, and Erik was killing so hard that Mitch didn’t even want to go on stage after him!!!
He was truly one of a kind, and this is especially tragic considering that his dad just died 10 days ago.
If you want to laugh, you should watch the below set! I remember I went out to the taping to support him and another friend and I was just in awe of how hard he killed and how much audiences loved him... but then ...
